- Tifa says: Just Listen was the first book I read by Sarah Dessen. And I'm mighty glad it was! (As that was the gateway for all of her previous books.)
The thing I love the most about the book is theme of perfection and imperfection, and being hidden behind a mask. These are issues that every teen, especially females, deal with during life, which makes readers relate even more to the character of Annabel Greene. What most intrigued me, however, was the fact that she was a *model*, which is a secret ambition for many girls. Her character shows us that though on the outside she appears to live a spirited, care-free life, complete with a beautiful body and a beautiful face, the true Annabel is far from the smiling, made-up version that the rest of Lakeview is so familiar of seeing in Kopf's Department Store commercials. The same applies for the, at first, enigmatic Owen Armstrong, known far and wide for his anger management problems and never-seen-without-his-iPod-ness. But as they progress, readers know that he too is far from the label that has been plastered onto him, and is instead a man who swears by telling the truth -- quite opposite of Annabel who'd rather avoid it.
The book's title reflects on the book itself -- don't make assumptions or judge, just listen. Or, I guess, in this case, read. x)
